This brief reflection paper outlines a personal career strategy based on self-assessment and labor market projections from U.S. News and World Report. The paper discusses how higher education and specialized skills training are prerequisites for most high-growth careers, highlights the particular promise of computer-based and science-related fields, and connects personal traits — such as extroversion and natural leadership — to career fit. The author also considers geographic factors, notably California's job market, and emphasizes networking and communication skill-building as key steps toward landing a lucrative position after completing a graduate degree.
Based on the assessments I have taken and the information offered by Moeller (2012), achieving a higher education is the most important key to securing a good career in the future. All but two of the jobs listed in the U.S. News and World Report require higher education and special skills training. Computer-based careers have the highest growth potential, which is unsurprising. I fully intend to take this information to heart and to apply myself more diligently at school so that I can land a lucrative career in a field that interests me.
My approach toward a career will be based partly on my personal financial interests and goals, as well as a knowledge of my personality and character traits. I have a natural leadership ability and am an extraverted person. Therefore, I will do well in any corporate setting requiring me to work with others on a team basis. Most of the jobs listed in the Moeller (2012) article suit me, with a few exceptions. I appreciated the fact that the report indicates which urban areas are most promising, because I can also plan for my future by looking at real estate options early. Thankfully, there are many jobs available in the state of California.
