This essay is a creative story on Sarty's life twenty years after his father's death from his attempt at burning De Spain's barn. It recounts how he felt after his father's death and his current job as a train conductor kicking vagrants like his dad out of the trains. He sits down on his bed and remembers what his pa did the first day he came to the plantation and even the time he defended his pa in court.

This is a ten page paper analyzing more than 7 poems that are all original and unique. There are haikus, sonnets and free verse poems. The questions that are answered include (1) Where did you get inspiration from? (2) Which author and poem did you refer to when writing this poem? (3) What did the poem mean to you personally? Did you enjoy it? Why or why not? How does this poem relate to your world and your life? Personal artifact that represents my self-discovery: Journaling

The proposed thematic unit is designed for a general education classroom at the second grade level. The suggested time frame is three weeks, but the unit could be either shortened slightly or extended by adjusting the number of activities. Reading activities include shared reading and self-selected reading from a variety of books provided by the teacher. The book selection should include multiple genres and multiple reading levels. A suggested list is included. Writing activities engage students in the five stages of the writing process. Students will create a weather journal that includes their writing and a reading log.
