Throughout my life I have been surrounded by healthcare professionals. My sister is a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), my family friend is a certified physician assistant, and my own healthcare provider is an ARNP. I come from a background where medicine is a way of life, and that environment has informed my own career decisions. Currently I am employed as a nurse and wish to advance my education in order to become a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP). This Career Vision Plan lays out my goals, the steps I will take to achieve those goals, the timeline I intend to follow, and the networking strategies I plan to implement in order to reach my objectives.
As a working nurse, my career vision plan consists of three stages with three specific goals for my future career development. My immediate objective is to remain employed at my current facility while registering for classes. My mid-range goal is to continue my education, including completing a preceptorship. My long-term aim is to finish my degree and become a Family Nurse Practitioner.
The timetable below summarizes these stages:
Immediate: Register for classes while working part-time.
Mid-range (in 2 years): Continue with education and complete a preceptorship.
Long-term (in 3 years): Graduate and apply for a position as an FNP.
1. Immediate goal — Register for classes. To accomplish my immediate goal, I will consult with my current employer to confirm that balancing schooling with work is feasible. I expect my employer to be supportive, as the facility has helped other employees manage similar scheduling conflicts and encourages continuing education. I will then visit my university's online registration portal and complete the enrollment process for the program. I will also arrange financial aid to ensure eligibility and consult with a university advisor to confirm that the program can be completed within my anticipated timeframe.
2. Mid-range goal — Continue education and preceptorship. I plan to continue scheduling classes while balancing work and education. For my preceptorship, I will contact a variety of clinical facilities to find a mentor willing to partner with me and further my practical education in the field of medicine. I will also schedule dedicated time each day for studying, completing assignments, and acquiring the knowledge and skills needed to pass my examinations.
3. Long-term goal — Graduate and apply for an FNP position. To accomplish this goal, I must remain fully dedicated to the plan and not allow obstacles to stand between me and my objective. Upon graduating, I will apply for a position at a facility where I would like to work. I will also use my social media presence as a marketing tool to promote my professional brand.
