About This Topic

A research proposal is a structured academic document that outlines the purpose, methodology, and expected findings of a planned study. Students across virtually every discipline — from English and education to business, public health, and social sciences — are required to write research proposals as part of coursework or degree programs. The form is academically significant because it demands that writers justify why a topic matters, define a focused research question, and demonstrate familiarity with appropriate methods for gathering and analyzing data.

The archived papers on this topic reflect an exceptionally wide range of subject matter, which is itself characteristic of the genre. Topics span corporate governance frameworks such as the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, agricultural systems like Thailand's rice industry, social phenomena including online dating growth, discourse analysis of car advertisements from 2000 to 2010, and practical concerns such as restraint use in elderly care and seat belt compliance. Some papers take a policy-oriented angle, others adopt qualitative case-study approaches, and still others focus on critical analysis of language and media. What unites them is the shared structural task: establishing a clear purpose, identifying a gap or lack in current understanding, and proposing a credible method for producing findings.

A strong research proposal begins with a precisely scoped thesis or research question — broad enough to be meaningful, narrow enough to be answerable within the project's limits. Evidence of existing literature, a defined methodology, and a clear rationale for why the question matters all carry significant weight. The most common pitfall is treating the proposal as a finished essay rather than a forward-looking plan, which causes writers to report conclusions instead of explaining how those conclusions will be reached.

Research concepts and applications
A research question that will be raised and answered in the research proposal will be how to reduce information technology (IT) anxiety among social workers in child welfare settings and how to make them more willing to employ IT. The method for attacking this issue will be to make a comparison with online education and distance learning. Many of the same issues with regard to the lack of face-to-face contact and human interaction exist in online education and many of the same adaptive strategies are applicable to better employing IT in the social work arena. As in online education, the client who is better suited for face-to-face interaction needs to be routed in that direction and those who deal better with remote technology need to be routed in that direction. If the social worker sees a successful integration of IT, they will then be more likely to use it across the board. Hopefully, since children are involved, this implementation of technology will go more smoothly than feared by the adult social worker.
