This reflection paper examines a counseling student's self-assessment across two structured evaluations: a Professional Practice Assessment (PPA) and a Cultural Competency Assessment. The paper identifies specific areas rated below proficiency — including self-growth activities, response to feedback, and knowledge of racism and discrimination — and explains their significance for future counseling practice. Drawing on these findings, the student establishes goals and objectives across three domains: engagement, accountability, and growth. Each goal is supported by two concrete, actionable objectives aimed at building self-awareness, cultural competence, professional resilience, and openness to constructive feedback.
For the Professional Practice Assessment (PPA), most of my responses were "agree" (rated as 3) except three. The growth section was where I rated myself at 2 for two statements. These are areas I need to work on more aggressively — specifically, learning to participate in self-growth and self-reflection activities. Developing these habits would increase my self-awareness, which supports greater emotional intelligence and a better understanding of others. It would also deepen my cultural understanding of clients throughout my counseling career and sharpen my critical thinking skills for interpreting the complexities I will face in professional practice. In another section of the same assessment, I rated myself at 2 for soliciting, considering, and responding mindfully to feedback. Not showing sufficient concern for others' perspectives could come across as dismissive and may negatively affect how I interact with or think about the people I serve.
For the cultural competency assessment, most of my responses were "agree" (rated as 3) except five statements for which I self-assessed with "disagree" (rated as 2). I identified that I need to build knowledge about racism, discrimination, power structures, and stereotyping — both for my own development and for my future clients. This knowledge would help me interpret mental health risks related to clients' cultural backgrounds, which requires ongoing and vigorous research. Cultural competence research would facilitate learning about diverse cultures and the unique challenges people face across different ethnicities, since effective public awareness and client education depend on a well-informed counselor. Research would also provide current information for working with people outside my own culture, including their values, beliefs, and the religious dimensions that may influence counseling treatment and narrow the scope of relevant mental health, social, and political factors.
My goal for the engagement section is to engage in constant research for continuous professional development, self-exploration, and self-reliance in matters related to cultural competence.
Objective 1: Engage in self-stress coping activities to reduce incidents that trigger me and restrict me from responding thoughtfully to constructive feedback. This would support self-exploration. For example, I can read for 15–20 minutes daily rather than spending that time on social media, or use stress-relieving coloring books for adults as a calming practice.
Objective 2: Because professional development requires ongoing research, I would use free time to read articles online — whether on my phone or laptop. If I am already using my phone, I believe it can be directed toward productive activity that builds my cultural familiarity and supports my professional progress rather than passive scrolling.
