This reflection paper documents a field trip to The Factory Interactive, a digital design agency in Miami, examining the role of technology in both the operational and cultural dimensions of the workplace. The paper observes how technology functions on two levels: in the foreground, driving creative work such as graphic design and animation, and in the background, managing building systems like lighting, security, and climate control. It also considers the social dynamics technology creates among employees and raises speculative questions about whether increasing technological dependence could eventually hinder rather than support human productivity.
The purpose of this field trip was to understand and experience the relationship between technology and the environment of Miami. A secondary purpose was to gather information about the trip site, The Factory Interactive, a digital design agency where human beings interact with and use technology as a central part of daily work.
Many of the appliances at The Factory Interactive are digital, including the thermostat, lighting controls, and security and surveillance systems. This is in addition to the technology used exclusively for design purposes. Technology in this environment operates on two levels: in the foreground and in the background.
The technology in the foreground makes the agency function directly. Designers use software to alter photographs or create animations of various kinds. The technology in the background, meanwhile, ensures that the building runs smoothly and efficiently. The alarm system and fire alarm systems were digital as well.
Technology is a significant part of the culture at The Factory Interactive. Employees talk about the work they are doing on computers and discuss and use applications on mobile devices to share work or further develop a project. Employees also use Bluetooth wireless earpieces and multiline phone systems throughout the office.
Technology is both a part of the culture and a facilitator of social interaction. Sometimes the social interaction is centered around the technology itself or around a product that the technology can produce. This dual role — tool and social catalyst — defines much of the day-to-day dynamic in the agency.
