This paper discusses a modern artist, Terrence Malick (filmmaker), who represents the ideals of the American transcendentalists (Emerson, Thoreau, Whitman, and Dickinson) in his art. It looks at his two films The Thin Red Line and the Tree of Life and shows how they echo themes in the works by these four artists.

Before examining four scholarly articles that address this issue and assessing the ways in which each of the writers performed her or his research, it seems useful to provide a general definition of the concept of self-verification. To omit this step would make it far more difficult to evaluate the following articles. Self-verification is a model or theoretical perspective that is based on the idea that each one of us wants to be understood by other people, and especially by those other people who are most important to us such as family members. We also tend to be especially sensitive to the opinions of those who have power over us such as work supervisors. This accords with common sense, for in all psychological dynamics we are likely to privilege those whom we love and those we fear.

Scott Fitzgerald's famous novel, the Great Gatsby, has been identified by the critics as a novel which stands at the boundary between nineteen century fiction and the modernism of the Roaring Twenties.

Beginning in the 1970s, various writers of the high and social sciences were proclaiming the need to return to the value of adding narrative understandings to cultural assessments. The Revival of the Narrative made this case for reasons of economic justice, which has always been the case since other critics of history made their cases in the past. Now a second revival of sorts is happening a technology gives new and broader life to the concept with so many people sharing their voices through computer connectivity across the universe of knowledge.

Though we make decisions every day, sometimes we are faced with dilemmas which force us to make potentially life-altering decisions. The narrative here describes such an instance, with the narrator being forced to face his fear of heights. Ultimately, the story demonstrates that the decision to face this fear was a positive life-altering decision for the narrator.

Beowulf, as one of the oldest texts in literature, is interesting to read because the text reveals much about the society for which it was written. We know that Beowulf placed a high regard for heroism and loyalty.
