Girl, Interrupted depicts the journey of a young lady, Susanna, from craziness back to sanity. After graduating high school, Susanna is the only one from her graduating class that does not go on to college. On the contrary, she does not want to follow in her mother's footsteps and instead wants to be a writer. However, Susanna takes a bottle of aspirin with vodka in an attempt to take control of her emotions. Her parents heavily influence her to check herself into a Psychiatric Hospital where she is to have some rest and get some help. At this hospital, Susanna meets many other girls that have illnesses that range from pathological lying to anorexia. She meets one girl in particular, Lisa, a sociopath, who has great influence over Susanna's behavior. From the beginning, Susanna and Lisa's relationship is intense as Susanna struggles to stay in control of her life while Lisa tries to control it herself. After an incident at the Hospital, Lisa and Susanna run away to a former inmate's, Daisy, house. Lisa mentally tortures Daisy and Daisy hangs herself. After this incident Susanna goes back to the Hospital to get better and Lisa runs away. At the end of the movie, Lisa returns, steals Susanna's diary, and reads it to the other girls. Susanna stands up to Lisa and in the end Susanna is released while Lisa stays at the hospital.

The movie was very enjoyable as it portrayed the coming of age of a teenage girl. I do not necessarily think that she was crazy or severely mentally ill, but she was going through a time of confusion in her life, one that many teenage girls go through. The movie had enjoyable moments when all the girls came together in the tunnels and played games and went through the doctor's files. It was reminiscent of teenage mischief. But it also had not so enjoyable moments like Daisy's suicide and Lisa's tormenting of the other girls at the hospital. However, the plot was very well-developed. It had a beginning which set up the rest of the story. It made it quite clear that even though the story involved the other characters, the main character would be Susanna. The rising actions were the development of Susanna and Lisa's relationship. The climax was Daisy's suicide, and after that, Susanna's character came to her own resolution. Susanna became the confident and safe young lady that she had always wanted to be. The flashbacks incorporated throughout the movie made us, the viewers, more in touch with Susanna's character, as they explained how she had gotten to the point that landed her into the hospital. Overall, the plot added on to the essence of the movie.

Psychiatric nursing was incorporated throughout the entire movie. The administering of medication was an overarching theme to this movie. All the girls in the hospital were obsessed with what medication they received and their behaviors depended on either receiving this medication or being tranquilized by medicine when they got too out of control. Nurses were involved in this entire process. Psychiatric nursing also went beyond drugs. The nurses came to care for these girls, especially Valerie who is seen by the girls as being a mother figure. She portrays this role really well by genuinely caring about the girl's well-being and making sure they would be kept safe. This is what psychiatric nursing entails.
