My coworkers are significantly aware of the workplace violence and the different forms that it can take like the bullying of new employees, gender-based bias, unfair workload allocation and outright discrimination. The employees are often sensitized on the issue of workplace violence and given literature that elaborates the government stand on the same.

Do your coworkers know what constitutes lateral violence?

My coworkers are aware of what lateral violence is within the workplace and they can make the difference between it and bullying. The lateral violence as known within the organization is the act of unfair treatment or unjustifiable handling of a colleague within the workplace. The coworkers know that it happens among the coworkers at the same ranks unlike bullying which is widely considered as originating from one in a higher position or rank directed towards an individual at a lower position. Lateral violence can be in the form of verbal abuse, non-verbal abuse, covert aggression or even in many occasions outright violence and harassment (Massachusetts Nurses Association, 2015).

Indeed, at the point of reporting to work for the first time, each new employee is given the employee handbook which, among other details, outlines what workplace violence is and the steps an individual needs to take in the event that they are harassed at work. When an employee feels harassed by either colleague of the people under whom they work, he needs to immediately notify the nurse management after which the nurse management will duly notify the human resources management who will investigate the matter and take the necessary steps thereafter. The entire process is normally handled with utmost confidentiality that will allow the protection of the victim.
