Workforce and Workplace Trends

The most important trend that is most likely to affect the workforce situation in the U.S. And Europe is represented by the aging of the population. This process will have a long-term effect on productivity, knowledge, and development. Regarding the U.S. workforce, another important trend to monitor is the increase of the female percentage. An increased number of women in the workforce will determine modifications in companies' and governmental organizations' policies and strategies. Marketing strategies will also suffer modifications, in relation to strategy, product, and market.

Globalization plays an important role in the workforce's dynamics. The diversity derived from the global marketplace will determine a necessity for diversity in both leaders and employees (Canton, 2010). The highest demand will be for educated, skilled, and experienced employees, in order to create competitive advantage. The identification, further professional development, and retention of such employees is expected to be the greatest challenge for organizations.

The projected workforce in 2016 in the U.S. is expected to reach 166.2 million. By 2039, the minorities will become a majority, accounting for half of the working population, and for more than 55% by 2050. The percentage of employees with college degrees has increased and the trend is expected to continue (HR Magazine, 2008).
