The fact that mental health facilities are closing down all around the United States and that there are ten times the number of mental health patients on the streets and in prison as there are currently being treated in a mental health facility is a financial and policy issue alone. Legislation needs to be implemented that helps these men find the care and treatment they need to either be functional members of society or kept from being harmful to functional members of society.

Patients who are treated in outpatient psychiatric facilities receive care on an as-needed, by appointment basis. Patients who are inpatients in psychiatric facilities receive around the clock care and may have their medications fed to them. They are in no way responsible for their own care. It may be possible for there to a be a shift between inpatient and outpatient treatment as needed.

5. What roles can nurses play to improve emergent evaluation and care for the mentally ill?

Nurses can pursue specialized training in the field of caring for the mentally ill. They can also act as counselors, within the boundaries of their role, to help find solutions for the issues that the mentally ill face. They also have the ability to administer medication, which is an important part of the treatment of mentally ill individuals.
