Utopia

My utopia would be an isolated piece of land, not very accessible from other areas -- such as an island. The island would be situated in a warm temperate area. The geography would be fairly flat without any high mountains. The entire island would be easily accessible by foot. The land would be very rich and fertile, with a variety of agricultural crop's; which would make the island extremely self-sufficient. There would also be a good supply of fresh water. The ecology would be balanced as well. Part of the island would be dedicated to farming and the production of natural and organic foodstuffs. This is a very important aspect as I feel that modern foods have become contaminated at even the lowest ecological level with antibiotics and the biological alternation of crops.

The island will however not be primitive in any sense. It will have a large underground site dedicated to the instillation of the latest technologies. This will include a comprehensive computer system. This system will monitor main aspects of the island, for example, the temperature and agricultural conditions. It will track changes in the climate for the best ecological conditions and balance. The balance between technology and agriculture will be carefully planned. Being an island, the computer system will also provide a warning system for the possibilities of tsunamis.

This Utopia will have no formal legal system. Rather, it will be run by a democratically elected committee of the members of the island. This committee will be responsible for all administrative affairs. Rather than rigid laws there will be the maintenance and encouragement of customs which will emphasize freedom and the respect for others. This committee will rotate so that no one person or group can assume control over there island. There will also be no payment or status involved in serving as a committee member. The committee will have the final say on all problem issues. Central to the customs of the island will be the insistence on no violence and aggression of any kind. This will be endorsed by the entire community.

Most importantly of all is that there will be no money or currency in the conventional sense. The economy will be a bartering system which will be based on every person's abilities and talents rather than on a false paper currency. This will promote a sense of self-worth and value in the individuals on the island.

The values of privacy and freedom will be encouraged but there will be no private ownership of property. The island and its property will belong to all the residents of the island and all will be responsible for its maintenance. However this does not mean that personal initiative will not be encouraged.
