Labor unions and collective bargaining

Last reviewed: July 21, 2013 ~3 min read

Union workers play an important role in shaping this country's fate and it is essential for them to acknowledge this. President Barack Obama's sympathetic attitude toward unions made him one of the best candidates for the next term. In contrast to Obama, Mitt Romney has employed a platform that deals harsh blows to unions and to workers in general. This is why it is important for the union to get actively involved in trying to open people's eyes with regard to the danger that Romney's election poses.

The fact that I previously held a job as a governmental official provided me with the ability to have a complex understanding of the masses and to develop a strong relationship with them. This is why it would be important for me to be in charge of volunteer work, taking into account that my expertise in working with people would certainly play an essential role in having them acknowledge the delicate position the country is in at the moment. One does not necessarily have to see this as a fight for Obama, as this is actually a struggle to emphasize the fact that workers are the country's backbone and that it would be wrong to ignore them.

Question 2

In spite of the fact that society has experienced significant social progress in recent years, certain groups continue to express discriminatory attitudes with regard to women. Gender roles are essential in the contemporary society and it is important for society as a whole to realize that women are actually capable to do a series of jobs traditionally associated with men. In order to increase the inclusion of women in top leadership positions in local and national unions, workers need to be provided with education concerning gender roles. By making them understand that there is practically no difference between men and women when concerning their ability to lead, workers are more likely to see beyond physical differences and concentrate on electing individuals whom they consider have the attributes required to occupy such a position.

Unions lack female leadership because workers have developed a gender-discriminatory cult over the years and as it is thus difficult for them to change their perception of this situation. Many of these people continue to believe that a woman filling a leadership job would probably reflect negatively on the union.

Question 3

The Legislation and Politics section on AFL-CIO emphasizes how the unions feel with regard to President Obama's re-election. The fact that the U.S. In general is going through difficult times made this election all the more significant for unions, as they would have experienced even more problems if Romney were to become president.
