Travel Kurt Anderson Investigates Different Essay

It is impossible to read the Great Gatsby without identifying if not with individual characters then with the struggles they experience. Truly, it is timeless. In my personal life, I have recently experienced several setbacks which forced a reassessment of those goals and achievements I had been working steadfastly towards for years. Much the way that Gatz had in the pursuit of becoming Gatsby. So certain was I as was he that in the pursuit itself the reason I was working so hard was lost. Re-reading such a cautionary tale at this juncture is a reminder, though fictitious, that it is important to make certain in each day that those things which you chase tirelessly are not in fact chasing you. Listening 3: Barbie

This broadcast discusses the origins of possibly the most famous Mattel product of all time. Barbie, a role model inspiration and rallying point concurrently has played a significant role in the lives of little girls for generations. Not from movies or from adult role models was my first conception of what "big girls" looked and dressed like but rather it was formed by Barbie. Conversely, it was also Barbie that ignited my desire to become an astronaut and the president and any of a number of other wonderful professions just decades earlier completely unavailable to women. Though it is true that Barbie may have had unseemly origins, and that she may represent unrealistic physical ideals to impressionable young girls however with those negatives must also be remembered the great number of positives which she brings as well.
No discussion of Barbie would be complete without an acknowledgment of the ways in which Mattel has attempted to update the originally rather chauvinistic toy into a role model which little girls and mothers could look to with confidence rather than shame. Her physical appearance has changed, as has the manner in which she portrays other ethnicities. Rather than being used as a rallying point for identifying the wrong ways in which women are perceived. I believe that an icon such as Barbie would be put to much better use affecting change.
