Oaxaca is a state in southern Mexico, which draws visitors for its food and drink, its strong native cultures, its textiles and its historical monuments. At the heart of the state is the central valley and the eponymous capital city. Here, visitors are attracted to the ruins at Monte Alban as well as those of Mitla and Yagul, all UNESCO World Heritage Sites, along with the Historic Center of Oaxaca. A second tourist area is along the coastal strip, which has a warm climate and many beaches.
Oaxaca has one of the highest populations of indigenous people of all Mexican states, with the largest group being the Zapotec, who predominate around the central valley. The primary language of Oaxaca is Spanish, but for many this is not their native language. Zapotec is widely spoken in the central valley, and other indigenous languages are spoken in their respective regions. English is not widely spoken, and found mainly among tourist-oriented businesses both in Oaxaca City and the coastal resort areas.
