Gaps in Workplace Safety Training
In identifying a performance gap, such as flaws in workplace safety in an industrial setting, the first step is to identify gaps that exist at present and how they will be bridged by carrying out a needs assessment, then determining what will be done with the information and how it will be reported and utilized. Those affected by this problem, such as plant employees working in potentially hazardous environments, will have to be involved in the planning and implementation of training designed to improve workplace safety. This includes training on what they should not be doing and things the company would like them to do, with the goal of achieving a 100% safety record and avoiding all accidents and injuries. New employees will also have to be trained in the correct Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes to ensure workplace safety, and to identify the variations between what they are expected to do and what is actually being done to maintain safety.
The first step will be to conduct a survey of workplace safety needs and requirements, as well as employee awareness of safety rules and procedures, and printed materials available on this subject. This survey will find out how well employees understand safety policies, what types of safety training topics would be most helpful, and whether safety-training videos and printed materials available at present are effective. This data will be collected, summarized and analyzed in an easy-to-use format to determine the short- and long-term goals of the safety training program. It will also review older safety and safety training policies to arrive at the best practices, clarify the roles and responsibilities of managers and safety officers and develop more training aids where necessary.
The survey identified key areas of gaps involving workplace safety in the areas of Forklift Training, Fire Extinguisher Training and Emergency Evacuation. Employees were unaware of how to properly signal to others when using a forklift for example, which type of fire extinguisher to use on a chemical fire, or what the difference in the emergency evacuation alarm sequence.
1.
Why training is the best way to address a performance gap since it ensures all employees are informed of the company policy in the same manner. It also makes certain all employees are aware of any updates or enhancements to the training that may come along due to quality improvements or new regulatory rulings. With training individual and corporate skill levels can be assessed in a non-threatening and safe playing field. Where it is not required to directly confront any individual whether they be a supervisor, manager, senior member, or entry level employee.
