Print Design and Movie Magic

Some factors to consider for good print design are accurate use of bleeds, edges, cropping, color, and elements of typography. Text should not be cut off or flowing over into the folding of brochures or the next newsletter columns. Print layout and design elements must meet in order to produce excellent advertising copy.

Bleeding

Bleeding occurs when a design element such as print or an image extends further than the edge of the margins or page. Sometimes this can be intended for effect, but is viewed as unprofessional if unintentional (Graphic Fetish, 2009).

Cropping

Crop marks, cropping is an element used to trim off the unnecessary parts of a picture image, or page. The crop marks are the cutting lines that are guides to setting areas being cut.

Color Schemes

Color can draw or detract from a print design. Using complementary colors in print can give warmth and an inviting feel to the print or it can bore the audience (Graphic Fetish, 2009). Understanding how to properly use color is important in reaching an audience or highlighting the capture of an eventful moment (Wildfire.com, 2012).

Typography design refers to how the printed material is laid out. Is the print copy effective in relaying the message to the audience or does it disrupt or interfere with the message (Kyrnin, 2012).

The lack of proper consideration of such factors will result in unattractive spacing issues that show up when the design is flattened out or printed. Good design includes visual appeal, does it have interesting or eye catching application. Is the layout appropriate or does it go somewhere, communicate the idea, service or product for which it is designed (Graphic Fetish, 2009). When it is viewed is this communicated within a few seconds, if not the viewer will most likely be lost and an opportunity as well.

The audience is very important in setting a goal for print design. Be conscious of who the audience is and what is being presented. Too much fluff is not productive. Focus Content of pictures, images, or drawings, artwork and text that show benefits. Make sure your print design offers something useful and valuable to the audience (Graphic Fetish, 2009). This could be entertaining, informative, or even critical. However the goal is to get their attention and get a response.

The most visually exciting film in 2011 was a scene from The Adjustment Bureau that showed the characters moving from one location in New York to another. In fact all through the movie most of the scenes were done with computer generated material. There are street scenes that were entirely fabricated but undetectable. There are people walking on the streets and vehicles moving by along with the superimposed characters of Matt Damon and Emily Blunt. The background people actually appear to bump into the characters as they dodge them running from the pursuers. The film is a romantic story by Philip Dick based on a metaphysical world. One of the scenes that was particularly appealing near the end showed the main characters escaping through teleportation from doorways into different areas of New York. These were seamless transferring of scenes such as Yankee Stadium then through a door that led to a street in Manhattan from there another doorway led to the Statue of Liberty on the Island (Wildfire.com, 2012).
