Cloth diapers may be used in conjunction with a fully disposable, flushable diaper liner that can be sent down the toilet to limit landfill waste. This may be a good alternative and a compromise between the government regulations and an ease of use for parents for their children. This may be a reason that cloth diapers are better, but on the other hand the diapers would still need to be washed, thus using fresh water to clean them. Fresh water in the future may also be a limited resource so this solution also has its own issues. Time will tell for which solution proves to be the most economical. Works Cited

Procedures

1. Add about 50mL to the graduated cylinder. When extracting water from the graduated cylinder in the steps below, never let the amount go below 0.0mL; instead, add 50mL more water and note that amount was added so an accurate total can be made.

2. Place three coffee filters over the mouth of a clear jar or drinking glass and secure it tightly with a rubber band.

3. Record the value of the amount in the graduated cylinder in Table I.

4. With the pipette add water drop by drop until the first drop falls inside the glass.

5. Record the number of drops in Table I that it took to reach the saturation point of the filter in Step 4.

6. Write down the exact weight of the piece of disposable diaper (cotton) in Table II.

Put the cotton in the top center of the glass covered with the already wet coffee filters.
8. Refill the graduate cylinder to about 50mL and record the value in Table I.

9. With the pipette add water drop by drop to the top of the cotton until the first drop falls inside the glass. Record this value in Table II.

10. Transfer the gelatinous substance (cotton) and set it aside for later. Do not break the filter.

11. Record your observations about the results.

12. Write down the exact weight of the paper towel in Table II.

13. Put the paper towel in the top center of the glass covered with the already wet coffee filters.

14. Refill the graduated cylinder and record the exact value in Table I.

15. With the pipette add water drop by drop to the top of the paper towel until the first drop falls inside the glass. Record this value in Table II. Remove the paper towel and set aside.

16. Record your observations about the results.

17. Write down the exact weight of the cloth diaper in Table II.

18. Put the cloth diaper in the top center of the glass covered with the already wet coffee filters.

19. With the pipette add water drop by drop to the top of the cloth diaper until the first drop falls inside the glass. Record this value in Table II. Remove the paper towel and set aside.

20. Label two cups #1 and #2.

21. Add two spoonfuls of the gelatinous material to each cup.

22. Make a sucrose solution by mixing 1 TSP of sugar with one cup of warm water, and mix to dissolve the sugar. Add 10 mL of this solution to Cup #1 and record observations.

23. Make a NaCl solution by mixing 1 TSP of table salt with one cup of warm water, and mix to dissolve the salt. Add 10 mL of this solution to Cup #2 and record observations.
