Theory

Identify some possible questions for research study, the answers to which would serve to generate theory.

The field of nursing is constantly evolving. This is because they are playing an important part in helping stakeholders to reach key objectives and enhance the quality of care patients are receiving. After conducting different forms of research, it is clear that these individuals will continue to be a major component in all healthcare teams and organizations. However, many of the various theories are not taking into account those skill sets. That is necessary for these professionals to succeed in the future. Some of the different areas include: their role in controlling costs, improving communication, reaching out to patients and serving as a liaison between colleagues / administrators. (Sitzman, 2010) (Butts, 2011)

As a result, there are several different questions which need to be examined to improve a nurse's ability to achieve numerous goals. A few of the most notable include:

What is the role nurse are playing in controlling rising healthcare costs? How can these ideas be implemented to enhance quality and meet the objectives of different stakeholders?

What steps can nurses take to improve communication, effectively control their responsibilities and improve the quality of care that is provided?

How can nurses evolve with the challenges they are facing in the future?

Answering these different questions will create a workable theory, which is improving their ability to deal with critical challenges. At the same time, it is providing them with the flexibility to adjust with transformations occurring inside any healthcare setting. (Sitzman, 2010) (Butts, 2011)

Question 2. Choose a theory that finds practical application in critical care/pediatric/psychiatric nursing and discuss the origins of the theory based on the following criteria: How did the happenings of the nursing profession impact the origin of this theory? What values, evidence, or existing knowledge did the theorist cite to support the theory? What was the theorist's motivation behind writing the theory?

A theory that will work effectively in critical care / pediatric / psychiatric nursing is Henderson's Needs Philosophy. It was originally developed by Virginia Henderson based upon her practice, education and experience. Originally, it was supposed to be a way of helping the patient to become more independent and take charge of themselves at certain stages. However, as she continued work with them, is the point Henderson developed different criteria for achieving these objectives. The most notable include: the ability to breathe / eat / drink normally, eliminate body waste, sleep / rest, select suitable clothing, groom themselves, avoid dangers in their environment, communicate with others, participate in different forms of recreation and utilize their cognitive abilities. (Melesis, 2011) (Butts, 2011)

The nursing profession had an impact on this theory, as healthcare professionals would meet the every need of patients. The problem is that they were not encouraging them to do activities on their own. This made them dependent upon the individual and it slowed their recovery. (Melesis, 2011) (Butts, 2011)

The basic values that the theorist focused on were: self-reliance, compassion, communication and working with other personnel to achieve the larger objectives. These areas are designed to improve the quality of care the patient is receiving by encouraging them to do more. At the same time, there is an emphasis on serving as a mentor who will guide and support them in the process. (Melesis, 2011) (Butts, 2011)
