Teen Mom

The MTV production Teen Mom follows the real lives of Amber, Catelynn, Farrah, and Maci as they deal with being teen moms. The show can be criticized for showing the worst side of American culture, but it sends a good message warning viewers about the potential pitfalls of unprotected sex. Each of the four main characters has had different life experiences, which led to their getting pregnant and their decision to carry a child to term. Because each of the characters is completely different from one another, it allows viewers to get multiple points-of-view and perspectives. Furthermore, the producers make sure to present the issue from a family and community perspective. The entire context, and the background information about the families of origin and their communities are important for understanding why each girl got pregnant, why she chose to carry the child, and why she made the post-partum decisions that she made. Following the relationship with the child's father has also been an important part of Teen Mom, although the baby's fathers are often not participating in the child rearing process as much as they could be. The father of Farrah's baby has died in a car crash, and she struggles with the would-be in-laws. Therefore, there are a lot of different dynamics in the show. Teen Mom is not a must-see on television, but it has inherent value because it reflects American culture. The show also provides viewers with options and opportunities, and can be very helpful for teenagers who do find themselves pregnant and feel scared.

Unfortunately, it sometimes seems like the show was produced to deter teenagers who get pregnant from having an abortion. While many American teenagers will carry their children to term, the mothers in the show do not often talk about their sense of regret. That could be because none of them feel any regret, but it is also possible that the producers of the show made a conscious decision to show teenagers who make a decision to keep the baby. As most of the girls suggest, keeping the baby does not necessarily mean putting one's dreams on hold. For some of the girls, it has been easier than others to cope.

In fact, one of the strengths of Teen Mom is that is reveals the socio-economic class differences that impact the teenage pregnancy experience. Maci comes from the most privileged background of the four girls. She is also the most optimistic about her future, other than Farrah, who also shows how strong a teenager can be when faced with a crisis. Therefore another strength of Teen Mom is that the show portrays adolescents as being young adults. When faced with the enormous responsibility of raising a child, suddenly maturity kicks in. The characters are like children one minute, and like mature adults the next. Watching them grow is a rewarding viewing experience, even if it feels voyeuristic at times.
