Another problem with e-mail is it can actually impact how we feel about ourselves and our importance in the world. I'm truly disappointed on days when I connect to my e-mail and don't have any messages from friends. I may know that Eddie Bauer is having a sale, but that isn't meaningful communication. Psychologically, when friends don't communicate, we feel a little down (Leonard 242). I suppose this isn't any different than not receiving a letter from someone, but we like the instant gratification now of an e-mail or im.

I think one of the most fascinating ways that people are coming together today is through online gaming. These virtual worlds encourage people to create characters and act out a role doing all sorts of things. Many find it entertaining, but it really is detrimental to relationships because people create avatars (characters) nothing like themselves, sometimes not even the same gender (Pham 285). Furthermore, people become obsessed with these games and other games such as fantasy football and spend huge amounts of time (and money) living in the virtual world and not the real world. True, players are meeting people, but the relationships are usually fake and superficial. I will admit that...

I use various means of technology everyday.
For instance, I can't imagine not having word processing while writing this paper. Technology is convenient and I don't want to live without it. That doesn't mean, however, that we should forget that people communicated for a long time without technology and there is something to be said for the old fashioned way of establishing relationships with others.
