The ATM came at a time when banking halls were only for the elite. This is a networked device that offers financial services to clients. The transactions that can be accomplished through the machine include but not limited to cash withdraws, cash deposits, and mini bank statements. The supporting data networks allow users to access their bank accounts from multiple locations. This technological development dates back almost five decades ago. However, enhancement of the initial idea of self-service in financial institutions has made the innovation thrive over the years. The innovation made it possible for financial institutions to have 24 hours of service to their customers. This is instrumental in enhancing the reliability of financial institutions.

The convenience that is associated with the use of ATM is hard to achieve through the use of human resource only. The technology helped in reducing the workload of employees of financial institutions. Since the system is automated and interconnected, the accounts balances of the users are adjusted automatically after the completion of the transaction on the machine. However, the advent of the ATM in the banking industry introduced new risks to customers such as card fraud. The attainment of a global interconnection of devices within different computer networks has significantly influenced the society. The technological innovation that has its origin in the united sets government before the commercialization process has enhanced communication across the world. Over the years, superior networking technologies are being developed to enhance the capacity of data networks. The Internet has led to the rise of a new form of business known as e-commerce. This is where all transactions are carried out online and the items being bought sent via mail services or other means. Such business transactions reduce the cost of operation of an organization by a significant factor since there no business premises required.
