The employee suggestion system is described as a wide range of efforts organizations undertake to seek for and use input from their employees in order to achieve cost savings. Organizations also undertake these initiatives to enhance product quality, customer service, working conditions, and workplace effectiveness and efficiency. While the efforts range from using suggestion boxes to executing formal programs to evaluate ideas and rewards, they result in a variety of ideas like simple improvements of work life quality or larger streamlining measures to reduce costs in the entire organization. The main reason for increased use of the suggestion system by employers to plan for increased employee engagement is because such systems create a win-win situation. The win-win situation contributes to increased employee engagement and input as well as enhanced efficiency and cost-savings for workers. While only a minimal number of employees have the spark of genius that contributes to a patent, every worker has the capability to generate suggestions that can result in profitable innovations for the organization (Henderson, 2006, p.352). Actually, since the introduction of these boxes into American organizations and businesses, the suggestion system has become a major element in enhancing improved products, services, and operations. According to findings of surveys across various organizations and businesses, suggestion systems have contributed to increased cost-savings for employers while promoting employee involvement in organization processes and productivity. As a result, every incentive and compensation plan practically recognizes the significance of the suggestion and provides rewards to promote employee creativity and innovation.
However, many employee suggestion systems have failed to accomplish their objectives despite of their potential to promote employee involvement. Some of the major factors that contribute to the failure of the suggestion system include failure by management to show interest and support for the system and consideration of suggestions as personal threat to supervisors. The other factors are allocating inadequate time to review and analyze the suggestions, fear of the impact of suggestions on coworkers, and inability to clearly describe and articulate ideas creatively and accurately. An analysis of the factors resulting in the failure of the suggestion system shows that it's not the quality of the workers but the quality of leadership they obtain.…
