Supplement evaluation and efficacy assessment

¶ … vitamin and mineral supplement products which are presently used, and compare and analyze its' amount of nutrients with the generally established nutrient guidelines per day, specifically by considering the RDA or AI and UL of the nutrients in question as related to women from 19 to 30 years of age, together with evaluating the daily use of those two products of choice.

The first supplement brought into question is Caltrate 600+D3, whose quantity of nutrients in a single tablet amounts to 800 IU of vitamin D3 and 600 mg of calcium. According to a 2010 re-evaluation of dietary reference intake, the Council for Responsible Nutrition agreed that the adequate value of calcium nutrient for women aged 19 to 50 falls between the AI of 1000 mg and the UL of 2500 mg (Dickinson, 2012). Thus, the recommended dose of one tablet of Caltrate 600+D3 per day would provide 60% of the daily recommended dietary allowance. In addition, the optimum values of vitamin D for the same population sector span from the AI of 600 IU to the upper level of tolerable intake 4000 IU (Dickinson, 2012). Hence, a tablet of Caltrate 600+D3 contains 800 international units of vitamin D3 and is close to the lowest limit of adequate intake.

The second supplement is Sunkist Vitamin C 500mg Chewable, Orange, whose amount of Vitamin C as sodium ascorbate & ascorbic acid in one tablet adds up to 500 mg. According to a New York Times Health Guide article, the daily recommended dietary allowance of vitamin C for women is 74 mg, for pregnant women 80 to 85 mg, and for nursing mothers 120 mg, with a UL of 2000 mg (A.D.A.M., 2012). Therefore, while the supplement does not exceed the upper level of tolerable intake in the recommended dose of one tablet per day, the product does not seem to comply with the specific needs of women aged between 19 and 30, because it contains a much higher quantity of vitamin C than recommended by A.D.A.M. precisely for this population sector.

After learning about the nutritional value of these two supplement products, and its particular action scope for women aged between 19 and 30 years, several conclusions ensue. Firstly, one tablet of Caltrate 600+D3 delivers the proper amount of calcium and vitamin D for an adult woman, especially because the value for calcium is 200 mg short of the total amount assigned for one day, and there is space left for a person's relative calcium intake from food servings over the period of one day. Moreover, the amount of vitamin D3 in the product is similarly reduced, and allows for the unpredictable factor of human consumption behavior during one day.
