Social Services and Government Intervention The social program that targets children from low income families of interest in this context is the weekend summer camp. This is a program within the township that I hail from. The weekend summer camp is a two day summer program that brings together children from destitute families to be able to be engaged in the summer activities and fun that other children often engage in. it has a well coordinated plan and the children are assisted by volunteers for the two days.

The program runs under the sponsorship of the township dwellers and the local church members who see the worth of the program. A group of volunteers, under an organized coordinator work with the young children to engage in physical activities and interactive activities that are deemed fit for the children. The children often go to different destinations for the two days retreat and the parents or guardians are often informed accordingly on where the children are scheduled to go.

This summer program for children began with a team of youth who, having been from poor background themselves, decided that they would like to make a difference in the life of young children. They wanted to give the children from poor backgrounds something that in their younger years they were not privileged to get, and this turned out to be a summer holiday...

They sold the idea to the community members and the churches therein and it was quickly adopted. The first summer camp was not as big as the current ones that we are engaged in. As the organizers and volunteers, we believe that these camps help the children foster their social skills, they help the children enhance interpersonal skills, develop self-worth, to learn how to cooperate with people from diverse backgrounds as well as build character. These camps, accompanied by caring staff members and mentors, help the children to face life challenges with positive outlook. The children are bound to develop new skills and they go back to their homes with incredible memories and new achievements. Among the common activities that the children engage in at the camp canoeing, crafts, high ropes, kayaking, swimming, sports and other team building activities.
The children camps are often supported by the regional ministry of children and youth. The ministry concerned here gives grants and financial relief to help the children continue accessing the summer camps annually (Ontario…
