Why do People Study Mythology?

There are all kinds of reasons why people study mythology. Those reasons might be part of a larger, cultural reason, or they might be very personal to the person doing the research and studying. Both ways are completely understandable, and if a person is thinking about studying mythology, he or she might want to take some of the reasons people study it into consideration to examine his or her own motives. For example, some people study mythology because they are very interested in other cultures. When studying a different culture, how (and who or what) that culture worships is very important. It can provide a lot of insight into the overall beliefs of that culture and how it survived the way it did for the length of time it was in existence. Of course, there are other reasons for studying mythology, and one of those is considering how mythology ties into current Biblical teachings.

Many people talk about the myth The Epic of Gilgamesh, and how close it is to the Biblical story of the flood. That is a good comparison, and there are many other mythological stories that are compared with one another in an effort to show how similar one culture is to another. The differences in cultures are important to examine, but their similarities are often much more significant because they show how everyone is alike in many ways, no matter what culture they come from or whether they are around in the present day or lived long ago. Mythology gives insight into culture and similarity, and it can also give insight into personal beliefs. Myths have been handed down from one generation to the next, and often they are not written down when they originally occur. Sometimes, they are not written until much later - and at that point it can be difficult to determine whether they are accurate based on the telling of the myth originally. It is important to write down myths and other information in each generation, instead of only providing oral information.

Some people say there is no value in studying mythology because history will provide information on cultures of the past. There is some truth to this, but history does not really address the personality of the people who are being studied in the way mythology does. History is like reading a resume to find out about someone. It is possible to get a lot of information about what they have done, but it does not give a clear picture of who they are (or were). That is the difference between history and mythology, and why both areas of knowledge should be studied. The hopes, beliefs, and fears of an entire people or culture can be studied and better determined by mythology as opposed to history. Most of the myths from various cultures all over the world started out as religious tales. They remained this way for a long time, but eventually they lost of a lot of the religious significance they had. However, they still have a great deal of value as tales of interest about a particular culture.
