Student Learning: As The Society Has Focused Essay

¶ … Student Learning: As the society has focused on relegating learning to one percentage score or letter grade for sorting and ranking students, learning is a complex process. Nonetheless, evaluating or assessing student learning has become more complicated because of the increase in the dealing with the purpose behind evaluating student learning. In the past few years, several types of assessments have been developed as part of evaluating student learning in a district, school, and classroom. These assessments types have formed the basis of curriculum evaluation practices that are adopted within the district, school, and classroom. While some of the assessments have been poorly developed, they have a significant impact on the perception of a student about the learning process. The increased focus placed on the various types of assessments has overshadowed the details involved in actual documentation and understanding of the student's learning process.

Curriculum Assessment Practices in San Diego, CA:

The evaluation of student learning and curriculum assessment practices are essential for various reasons including provision of personal data to inform instruction and offering students with crucial feedback that is necessary to direct their ongoing learning process. As a result, teachers and other educators should be on the frontline in the development of efficient tools to not only assess but also enhance student learning. Actually, the need to assess and enhance student learning significantly contributes to the development of curriculum assessment practices within a district, school, and classroom.

According to the findings of research, San Diego is one of the first districts in America to assess student learning through the use of an assessment portfolio system that incorporates English language learners (Gomez, n.d.). As the foundation of curriculum assessment practices within the region, the assessment portfolio system is based on a shared vision of standards-based education. In this district and across schools and classrooms, the assessment criterion is used as part of an assessment program...

Consequently, assessment portfolios can also be used in the decisive evaluation process as both state and district educational staffs apply standards-based curriculum reforms.
The use of this assessment method as the basis of curriculum assessment practices in San Diego district has been fueled by current school reform movement in which evaluating a student's achievements is an essential part of the initiative. Through the use of this method, San Diego has been one of the few districts where the learners' specific needs are accommodated in the evaluation process. This is primarily because the portfolios are developed to be all-encompassing and consist of genuine description of what students can do.

Most Effective Method to Assess Student Learning:

The assessment of student learning is at the heart of education since parents and teachers use test scores to weigh the academic strengths and weaknesses of a student ("How Should We Measure Student Learning?" 2008). Actually, communities depend on the student's scores to judge the quality of the district's or school educational system. Moreover, policy makers at the state and federal government level use the tests or similar metrics to identify whether public schools are effective in enhancing a student's learning process. As the demands of the modern world require students to develop or learn various skills, there are several forms of assessment.

Since ordinary short-answer and multiple-choice tests aren't the only means of evaluation, several states are including performance-based assessments into their standardized tests. In certain cases, other states and districts are adding together assessment criteria like student portfolios and presentations are extra ways of understanding students' learning process. Most of the current forms of assessment are rigorous and require students to use what their learning in the real world tasks and issues.

One of the critical factors in assessment of student learning is understanding the differences of students in their attitude towards learning and teaching, motivation, and…
