Stay Motivated' Over The Course Of A Dissertation

¶ … stay motivated' over the course of a long and involved research project. The main questions I face are finding an adequately-sized population of individuals to study who are willing and able (logistically and emotionally) to participate in my research project on the effects of human trafficking. Once I have my test population I believe that my assurance and comfort level about completing the dissertation will be greater. However, even then additional and unexpected ethical concerns may arise regarding the emotional health of the population I am studying; the need for appropriate cultural sensitivity, and translation questions. Once these areas are resolved then I will feel I will be able to select my committee and chair to complete my prospectus. My interest level in and passion for the subject remains high: after researching the pervasiveness of human trafficking I feel more motivated than ever to ensure that the voices of women who have been trafficked are heard. I also believe that there is a great deal still unknown about human trafficking within academia and I hope to add to the conversation on this very important and relevant topic. I most look forward to conducting my physically-based research (the actual interviewing process). The technical aspects of coding and statistically analyzing the results are the components which intimidate me the most and provoke the greatest anxieties.

To face challenging tasks in the past, I have forced myself to set a series of small, personal deadlines regarding the project to ensure that I do not fall behind schedule and the task does not become too overwhelming. Breaking down a large and seemingly insurmountable obstacle into a sequential series of manageable steps is essential. I also intend to set aside time every day to devote to the project, to ensure that I make progress on a regular basis and I do not procrastinate about any of the steps in achieving my goals. If I see that any problems are on the horizon, I will contact my advisor to help me resolve them as soon as possible.

Self-assessment

The process of refining one's research skills never ends and is a continual 'work in progress.' Something I still need to work on is creating a targeted research question. This is especially critical given that a strongly-worded research question can make the difference between an effective research project and an ineffective one. It is almost impossible to 'recover' from a poorly-worded research question. Qualitative research can encompass so many different variables it is essential to have a refined enough focus to ensure it is feasible to answer.

This course has enabled me to narrow my approach to the research process as a whole. It has also enabled me to understand that every study has its limits. Even though I hope that my dissertation will yield important findings and make a meaningful contribution to the literature, I understand that because of the inherent nature of the subject matter, problems may arise. For example, there will be inevitable biases in the data because of the persons who are willing to volunteer their time. The subject matter I am dealing with (human trafficking) is very uncomfortable for many people, particularly the victims, and some may be unwilling to volunteer information.

The topic has also made me much more conscious of the need to take into consideration ethical protocols when conducting a research study. There are many interesting topics which might be problematic to conduct research on, simply because there is no way to create an ethical framework through which to gather information.

On the other hand, I have come to appreciate…

Debates can be formulated for and against with evidence presented that supports one side or the other. First written down, these arguments can then be presented in written and oral forms, thereby reinforcing English usage in two forms: written and oral (Walvoord, 1982). Further strategies for converting the teaching into a relevant exercise are by having students summarize and critique articles and drafts (Walvoord, 1982), and by using dyadic

two forces that motivate people: self-Interest and fear. Motivation is too much of a complex subject to narrow it down to two forces. In order to examine the forces that motivate people it is important to first define motivation and examine some of the theories of motivation. The complexity of the subject can be
