Speech - Cyclical Weight Loss Essay

Generally, weight loss involves a loss of both fat and muscle in comparable proportions; it is impossible to lose only one type of tissue through dieting. A 20-pound weight loss may represent approximately fifty percent fat and fifty percent muscle tissue. On the other hand, when temporary weight losses are followed by a return to the starting weight, most of the weight regained is specifically fat. Every cycle of short-term weight loss and regain, therefore, (in effect) exchanges more and more muscle for body fat in every cycle (Larson-Duyff, 2002).

Conclusion:

Weight loss is a medical necessity for millions of Americans, yet most of those who do make the attempt to lose weight choose methods that are ineffective in the long-term. Most dieters actually increase their overall body fat every time they lose weight and then regain it back. In many cases, they would actually have been better...

Invariably, the methods that produce dramatic initial weight loss become too difficult to maintain beyond the first year or two. Ultimately, they need to reach their goals through more practical efforts at improving their dietary habits that produce slower, but more long-lasting, results capable of being maintained for life.
