In a society that is as wealthy as Austraila, it is still amazing that so many individuals experience feelings of deprivation and poverty. Sociology and Health

I enjoyed reading about health this week and understanding that a sociological perspective speaks to more than just the physical or biological health of an individual or society but also includes social factors. We often look at health in terms of the specific momentary physical ailments or diseases rather than whole person. When applied to women one can see that sociology can impact health beyond physical in the manner in which health services are delivered to this population. There is a significant emphasis on reproductive health in women who are in their reproductive years without attention being paid to the needs of specific groups of women. Looking through a sociological lens allows us to identify the connection between social factors such as income, housing, and education with physical health...

One often thinks of social norms as being understood in a given society but the leap is not often made to the inclusion of deviance a social construction as well rather we believe that persons who are deviant are somehow lacking in the moral values that other individuals possess. This allows for an individual emphasis rather than a society-based responsibility. Yet once processed it makes sense that if behavior norms are established by society then all behavior must be measured against these norms. The decision that a behavior is deviant therefore also falls into the category of a societal construct. This was a new way of frame the concept of deviance for me and this week has challenged me to look at issues through a sociological lens.

Both what make up a race and how one recognizes a racial difference is culturally determined. Whether two individuals consider themselves as of the same or of different races depends not on the degree of similarity of their genetic make up but on whether history, tradition, and personal training and experiences have brought them to think of themselves as belonging to the same group or to different groups (Spickard,

Australia Ethno Ethnocentrism, Cultural Pluralism
Words: 2248 Length: 7 Document Type: Essay

Efforts in Australia to change this condition have on many levels been met with controversy and resistance, such as it demonstrated in the article by Clarke (2005). This would address the debate over the emergence of support for laws punishing 'racial vilification' at the public level. Prompting free speech debates and simulating an already robust debate over racial issues in Australia, this discussion highlights the inherent challenge of changing attitudes

The paradox of a U.S. national identity involves multiple contradictions, such as citizenship rights promised to U.S. citizens in contrast with differential group discrimination; of external and internal forms of racism with and through one another accepting and excluding certain categories of citizens; of civic and ethnic nationalisms that respond to the established but unstable two-faced U.S. national identity; the combined change and continuity that has allowed American society to

Multiculturalism Challenged by New Theories
Words: 1698 Length: 5 Document Type: Essay

On the other hand, multiculturalism appears to be automatic in conceding division (Werbner, 2006). In multicultural societies, issues of bias and racism invariably summon political leaders whose base of power is dependent on division. This is contrary with cosmopolitan societies, which considers division unworldly and rude. While one society keeps its opening up its wounds, the other one tends to let its wounds heal by themselves. This means that one
