Network and Business Intelligence: Discussion Locus and Political Hotbed
The objective of this study is to examine why the implementation of BI in an organization in the context of total social-technical system is more efficient and effective than the traditional way of implementing BI in the context of social subsystem alone.
Business Intelligence is reported to as a professional discipline to "prescribe organizational and technological interventions aimed at providing timely, accurate information to the right people, at the right times, to enable and improve business decision making." (Clark, nd, p. 1) This is reported to be situated "firmly within the domain of decision support systems (DSS) and scarcely an academic paper or vendor sales-pitch fails to mention BI's power to impact decision-making." (Clark, nd, p. 1) However, there is still little comprehension of how the tools and strategies of BI impact decision making.
Components of Business Intelligence
It is reported that business intelligence "is an attribute of the whole system, not the individual parts" and to include the following stated components: (1) Perception Monitoring which involves the organizations ability to collect and process information concerning the business and the environment in which the business operates; (2) Appreciation & SenseMaking which speaks of the organization's interpretation and understanding of itself and its environment; (3) Reasoning Action relating to the effectiveness of the "collective processes of thinking, decisions, policy, and action. (Rightpoint, 2014, p.1) (4) Knowledge Memory, reported to be related to the manner in which the organization is able to retain the experience of the organization in a form that is both "accessible and useful; How does the organization retain experience in a useful and accessible form? (Rightpoint, 2014, p. 1) (5) Learning which speaks of the organization's capacity to build and improve "knowledge, capabilities and processes." (Right Point, 2014, p. 1) (6) Communication which relates to how information and knowledge is exchanged among individuals and groups in the organization. Clark (nd) reports "Business intelligence (BI) is a DSS discipline aimed at providing timely, accurate information and analytical capabilities to support business decision-making." (p.1) It is also reported of business intelligence that "An organization is a socio-technical system, and may be composed of many interoperating systems, each containing some intelligence. Thus the human intelligence of many employees is combined with the artificial intelligence of machines, contained in intelligent buildings, and distributed through intelligent cyberspace." (Right Point, 2014, p. 1)
