The researcher's interest consists of accessing the social ramification of a widespread unrest in the nursing profession given the rising militancy in the nursing profession.

Concepts that needed to be "operationalized" into measurable variables

The study concentrated on assessing the rising militancy in the nursing profession by evaluating nurses' satisfaction with the work. The key areas in this assessment comprised of alienation from work, forms of industrial activities and militant actions and other strategies deployed with an aim to bringing about change in the nursing profession. These three aspects gave rise to seven (7) variables that the researcher intended to measure and operationalize for the study's needs. The chosen sociological needs are independent and intervening variables: work satisfaction, union support, personal alienation new professional autonomy and image of nursing. The dependent variable: support for strike action and support for change to work conditions.

Data collection methods

Relevant information concerning the research was gathered by use of, structured Questionnaires. The questionnaires were distributed by mail to targeted respondents and sent out in return envelops.
