Self-Concept Awareness Scenario One: You Essay

In one case you please the boss in the other you don't, but in both cases you demonstrate a disregard for the wishes of your loved ones. Scenario Three: A favorite relative tells you he or she is disappointed that you have decided not to continue the family tradition of pursuing a career in a particular field. How do you respond?

Positive response: I would acknowledge that the family tradition was something to be proud of and that I was proud of it as well. I would explain that my interests/passions lie in a different direction and hope that she would understand and support me in my effort to make the family proud.

Negative response: Tell her that it's my life, I will do as I please and to mind her own business.

A close friend says, "I love your new look. It compliments your eyes and makes you look so much younger!" How do you handle that compliment?
Positive response: I would say "thank-you," and move on. I would hope that the implied insult was unintentional.

Negative response: Ask "Are you saying that I looked old before?" putting them on the defensive.

There are right and wrong ways to respond in these situations. A positive approach reaches out to the other person and attempts to build bridges. It demonstrates a regard for your fellow human beings and an appreciation for the human condition. A negative response can destroy communication and damage relationships.
