Class description
Elena (ESL)
Elena is the child of a domestic worker and a worker for a local landscaping service. She is a recent immigrant from Mexico and has little exposure to formal, academic English. However, her IQ has been tested as average. Although she is shy, she willingly participates in classroom activities where language skills are not required. Elena is seated near the teacher so the teacher can keep an eye upon her, to watch her for signs she does not understand.
Carl (LD)
Carl has been tested as a high-functioning autistic student. Carl is verbal, but has social challenges and is inclined to be withdrawn or combative when teased or forced to participate in activities where he has little interest, such as English and social studies. Carl is seated to the other side of the teacher in the front row, but away from Elena. Elena does not understand his disability fully and Carl's sudden reactions can make her nervous.
Student 3: Emily
Emily is a child with a normal IQ. She is social and is frequently distracted by her friends. Emily is seated next to Elena (with whom she is friendly, but not close friends) so she can help Elena when Elena experiences problems because of a lack of English vocabulary.
Student 4: Jane (LD)
Jane has been diagnosed with ADHD. She often needs instructions repeated to her twice, for her to understand them, and has particular difficulty with long assignments. Jane is seated away from the windows and the doors, in the center of the room to minimize distractions.
Student 5: Bobby
Bobby is very interested in things he can do with his hands. He is average in most of his academic subjects but a talented athlete. He is relatively focused, so he is seated next to a window.
Student 6: Suzy (Gifted/exceptional)
Suzy has been tested as gifted in all of her subjects. She can be shy about participating in class, but her mother wants her to be challenged more this year. Suzy is seated towards the center of the room to encourage her to participate.
Student 7: James (LD)
Diagnosed with a sensory processing disorder and thus seated towards the middle of the room, away from outside distractions, near the teacher and near quiet Suzy.
Student 8: Lila
Lila says she wants to be a teacher someday. She is average in her subjects, and enjoys English and art. She is seated next to Carl because of her high level of emotional intelligence and willingness to provide assistance to him.
Student 9: Adam (Gifted/exceptional)
Flagged as gifted in kindergarten, Adam goes to an enrichment program for the specially gifted after school. Adam is seated towards the back of the room so he can leave early for his program without disrupting others.
Student 10: Marta (ESL)
Another recent immigrant, Marta's father was transferred to America as part of his high-profile job working for an international corporation. Marta is seated to the front so the teacher can identify when she needs additional help in English more easily.
Student 11: Brianna (LD)
Brianna has a mild sensory processing disorder; she is seated near Jane to minimize distractions.
Student 12: Marie
Marie is a student of average academic ability who is a junior gymnast. She leaves early to go to practice and only attends school for half the day. She is seated in the back to enable her to leave quietly without disrupting others.
Student 12: George
George enjoys science and math. He only recently joined the district, and is seated in the center to make it easier for him to get to know his peers.
Student 13: Martin (LD)
Martin has been diagnosed with ADHD. He is seated to the center of the room so the teacher can keep an eye upon him and enforce discipline when necessary, as well as monitor his concentration.
