Scholarship Application

A couple of years ago, as my dad and I were watching the evening news on our age-old Television set, I suddenly declared that I wanted to be the country's president. At the time, I was only 8. Startled by this unusual declaration, dad immediately requested to know my reason for wanting to lead the country. As it were, the news presenter had highlighted a serious issue that was affecting the entire country -- hunger. Apparently, many people felt that the government was not doing enough to guarantee food security to its citizens. I wanted to be the country's president so that I could fix the hunger problem for good. Given my tender age, I don't think I had any idea of how I would go about solving the perennial hunger problem. However, I still felt I could make a difference.

I am originally from Bosnia. Although I have always wanted to make something out of myself and perhaps contribute towards the betterment of the society and the entire world by extension, the odds were seemingly stacked up against me from the start. Coming from a country reeling from the adverse effects of war, I perfectly understand how hard it can be to succeed when the conditions are not enabling. My family had to move to this great country, the U.S., to escape the war and a hostile situation back at home. So far, my family has sacrificed so much to see me through college. I would be lying were I to say it has been easy. In addition to my college fees, the family has also been struggling to raise funds to see several impoverished young relatives back home through school. Given the great value I attach to education, I wouldn't want these kids to drop out of school and fade into oblivion. It is with the full knowledge of my family's constrained resources that I apply for this scholarship.

I view the scholarship as a launching pad for my numerous aspirations -- both in relation to my academics and career. Currently, I major in human resource management. Within the next eight (8) years, I hope to be through with a doctorate in a human resource management or development related field. This will give me an edge as a professional in human resource management and/or development. In my opinion, a doctorate in this field will also provide me with a special understanding of the various global workforce issues. Career wise, within the next twelve (12) years, I see myself as an experienced human resource executive ready to assume any challenging leadership position in workforce development.

Currently, I work as a bank teller. Based on my exceptional performance, I have also been granted a role as an assistant supervisor. In addition to granting me an opportunity to interact with diverse clients, my job as a teller has also helped me understand the internal workings of a large organization. As a human resource professional, I need to develop excellent interpersonal skills. Further, I also need to be familiar with the meaning of organizational behavior, structure and culture in a practical sense.
