College Scholarship Application

I was only eighteen, but the first-born in a single-parent family of four, when I enrolled at Molloy College in 2009. My family attaches high value to education, and my mother was determined to send me to college at all costs. The entry fee was relatively high and it was really sad to see her struggle with my siblings' fees the entire semester. I imagined that a repeat of the situation in the next semester, and then the next, would be the beginning of the collapse of my siblings' academic goals; something that I was not prepared to see happen, and I was certain my mother wasn't either. I secured a part-time job, taking advantage of my employer's flextime policy to balance between school and work. I have, in this way, been able to meet some of my own, as well as my siblings' basic educational expenses - but with my mother headed for retirement, my contribution will have to go up.

I am applying for a Molloy College scholarship because the second degree I am currently pursuing requires more school hours and more concentration, and I would, therefore have to work less hours, and earn less money. I want to give this degree my all because it will not only quench my thirst for knowledge, but also put me in a better position to actualize my passion to help others. I have, throughout my life, strived to achieve academic excellence and give back to society through education. Though under a great deal of stress - having to balance between work and school, I have managed to maintain an excellent GPA of 3.7 in the last two semesters, in addition to being on the Dean's list three times since joining Molloy in 2009.

Although education is a fundamental aspect of my life, I have been involved in a number of valuable out-of-class activities. I dedicated my high school years to being part of valuable community clean-up activities, nursery day, and voluntary Sunday-school teaching programs. I believe that by taking part in such community activities, I set a good example for those younger than me to follow.

Work also plays a significant role in my life. Until four months ago, I worked twenty to twenty four hours a week to cater for my own, as well as my siblings' educational expenses. I presently work only 12 hours a week. I enjoy working because it gives me a feel of what to expect upon the successful completion of my second degree.
