Safety Issues Related To Waste Disposal Essay

Hazardous Waste Environmental considerations related to hazardous chemical storage include concepts like green chemistry, which is a method of engaging in this process in such a way that hazardous chemicals are actually made obsolete. However, green chemistry is not always feasible; therefore, it is possible to reduce the negative impact that storage of hazardous chemicals could have on the environment by storing them in small batches and containers and thus reducing the level of risk that exists should the chemicals manage to leak or actually become pollutants (National Resource Council Committee on Prudent Practices in the Laboratory, 2011). Hazardous chemicals can become toxins in any environment and therefore precautions should be taken when storing them for the sake of the environment. Several strategies such as air pollution management, water pollution management, and soil pollution prevention can be implemented alongside control measures, the cost of which should also be considered.

The economical impact of control measures is that for facilities with an industrial base, "adequate, well-designed, well-installed, efficiently operated and maintained air cleaning devices" should be obtained and utilized (Spiegel,...

Methods such as dispersion can also be utilized to reduce the level of concentration that a particular pollutant. However, targets may still exist that need to be considered outside the initial target area -- for example, pollutants in plumes of smoke may be diluted out the smoke stack but upon settling on the ground they impact targets, which is another environmental concern that needs to be considered. Therefore, depending on the pollutant, dispersion may not be a positive step in every case. If it is used when it should not, the economical toll can be heavy, as clean-up can be costly and adverse effects, such as run-off can be devastating if it causes illness in a populace.
This leads into safety considerations that should be made when storing chemicals. Questions to ask are: What is the least amount that needs to be on hand in order to minimize risk? Other questions pertain to the make-up of the chemicals and how to store them so that danger of mixing and becoming flammable or toxic through accidental combination or spill does not result.

Waste minimization and reuse factor into this discussion as alternative methods of dealing with waste. They can actually be very effective means of limiting waste by implementing programs like recycling. Not all pollutants must be emitted into the atmosphere or as contaminants…
