Rio De Janeiro Crime In Essay

He suggests that there is a new trend of crime spreading to the richer zones is not a typical of Rio as he suggests and the reason he give of this is due to the thriving drug trade and the contiguity to the congested slums also known as Favelas. He further holds the opinion that the new restrictions that were introduced to the inmates particularly drug convicts resonated into the spate of crimes in the richer zones as well. In his opinion, the drugs cartels among the several favelas are controlled by drug some few gangs numbering to about three. This to his opinion is a pointer to a highly organized and highly centralized drug dealing in Rio.

The drug issue is so serious that 70% of the murders in Rio are...

re drug related and even though the authorities have launched measures to curb the situation, the writer waters it down and scorns it by calling it 'ad hoc measures' that end up killing the people it is supposed to protect since as the writer says they are 'quick fixes' hence ineffective in handling the levels and rate of crime in Rio.
The other impediment to effective tackling of crime as the write notes is the lack of financing where the police force is presented with $135 million to handle the crime in a year at the rate of crime and the rate of corruption among the Rio police, makes it impossible to adequately relieve Rio of the crimes.
