The most effective strategies for gaining the cooperation and continual use of evidenced-base practice center on quantifying the performance gains made possible using the collection of these techniques. The ability to show how evidenced-based foundations in general and those specifically related to practices and prescriptive programs for patients have significantly changed the daily approaches physicians and nurses take with this aspect of their practice (Kovner, Rundall, 2006). What is also necessary is for physicians and nurses to take an active ownership of outcomes and have a high level of autonomy in defining their own objectives as they relate to evidenced-based practice (Elgert, 2005).

Evidenced-based practice cannot be pushed or dictated into a culture; it needs to be engrained into operations through the effective use of change management strategies and programs. The best implementations of evidenced-based practice allow physicians and nurses a very high level of autonomy in how they will use the information to automate tasks, there is also an investment in communicating the purpose of evidenced-based practice (Kovner, Rundall, 2006). Giving physicians and nurses a degree of autonomy, mastery and purpose in how they manage the change process to evidenced-based practices is the pivotal catalyst in shifting medical facilities' staffs to embracing evidenced-based practices (Elgert, 2005). When all of these factors can be combined into a single unified change management strategy, the value of evidenced base practice becomes clear and they are used for streamlining and making more effective treatment plans and programs.

How will implementation of electronic medical record systems assist in the detection of error and improvement of quality? How will they hinder this process?

Medical facilities that have the ability more accurately track the performance of their electronic medical records contributions to the performance of a medical center, can also be used for streamlining and simplifying complex medical records reporting, and are often used for Sig Sigma-based quality management initiatives (Darr, Harrison, Shakked, Shalom, 2003). All of these factors favor the use of electronic medical records as the foundation of medical records management systems. These systems can also contribute to the detection of errors and improvements in quality by indexing patient treatment results to the overall performance of the system as well.
