Iran is important to the U.S. because the nation's leadership has proven to be unpredictable in their actions, which makes containing any nuclear ambitions a pressing national security objective. 2.) Why U.S. public opinion is important to foreign policy?

In a democratically operated nation like the U.S., all government policy is necessarily informed by the collective will of its citizenry, and foreign policy decisions must be made to reflect the prevailing public opinion. After two woefully misguided wars were launched in the Middle East following the September 11th terrorist attacks, the American public is rightfully wary of engaging in another protracted military conflict. While Iran may pose an existential threat to Israel, one of America's most important historical and strategic allies, any appeals by the federal government to engage in an escalated conflict would likely be met with resistance...

According to the Pew Research Center's Trends in American Values' report released in June 2012, "83% agree that 'we should pay less attention to problems overseas and concentrate on problems here at home' ... up 10 points since 2002, shortly after the 9/11 attacks, and the highest percentage expressing this view since 1994" (Pew Research Center 1). As evidenced by President Obama's cautious application of power in Egypt, Libya, and Syria during the recent uprisings in those nations, America's foreign policy strategies must now be couched in the public's overwhelming desire to improve the domestic economy and protect the lives of American soldiers.
