Psychological Effects of Imprisonment in Adult Correctional Facilities

There are various psychological effects associated with the confinement of an individual to a correctional facility. The effects may often vary depending on whether someone is a juvenile or an adult. This study identifies various psychological effects related to one's confinement to a correctional facility whether for a short or long time.

Adult correctional facilities require prisoners to give up the independence and liberty to make their decisions and choices. This procedure needs what is an agonizing adjustment for most individuals. Indeed, some individuals never adjust. However, with time, inmates adjust to the muting of independence and self-initiative that correctional facilities require. As such, they are forced to become progressively reliant on contingencies in correctional facilities that they once opposed. Gradually, it seems less or more natural to be declined s control over their daily choices and, ultimately, some prisoners may come to depend intensely on institutional decision makers to make decisions for them. In addition, they use the schedule and structure of the correctional facility to organize their everyday routine. Although it hardly ever happens to such a level, some individuals do lose the potential to initiate actions independently and make decisions. In extraordinary instances, significantly institutionalized individuals may become uncomfortable when their past autonomy and freedom is returned.

For some inmates, adult correctional facilities are so stark and psychologically agonizing that it triggers a form of stress serious enough to generate post-traumatic stress after release. Moreover, basic commonalities define the inmates' lives in the society. At the behavioral and psychological level, inmates laboring in the facilities create a "prison mask," which tends to foster the alienation of an individual. Eventually, they may create psychological flatness that becomes serious and devastating in relationships and social interaction. Later, they may discover they have created a lasting and unbridgeable range between themselves and other individuals. The social distancing and alienation is a defense mechanism against exploitation. The lack of social control in the immediate jail atmosphere makes psychological investments in connections unforeseen and risky.

In addition, because many adult correctional facilities are clearly risky locations without escape or exit, inmates become hyper-vigilant and always alert for signs of personal risk or threat. From the high-level presence of individuals in their immediate atmosphere positioned to maximize on the weak point or exploit inattention or carelessness, suspicion and interpersonal distrust often arises. Some inmates learn to project a challenging convict veneer, which threatens others. Indeed, many inmates "believe that unless offenders can project a picture that provides the possibility of a crime, they might be taken over and exploited throughout the length of their sentence." The development and occurrence of psychological sickness in correctional facilities also arise from the atmosphere generated in the facilities, which creates an unhealthy atmosphere. Evidently, at least a third of adult correctional facilities are congested, breeding an atmosphere of violence and chaos for juveniles. Far from getting effective treatment, juveniles with behavioral health issues experience worsening and intense deterioration when held in adult correctional facilities. This negates the reason for the confinement.
