Thirdly, having the ability to motivate the project team is a characteristic of a project manager. Projects can have ups and downs for the project team. When target dates seem far from reach, having a project manager with the ability to motivate the group by setting smaller goals and giving incentives can improve the team's morale. Communicating when things go well instead of only talking about the negative can help communication overall and help motivate the team to continue with their hard work (Bastian). It is important for project managers to have effective leadership and there are several characteristics that help make someone an effective leader. A few of the most important characteristics are having patience, organizational skills, and being creative. Patience allows the project manager to deal with troublesome situations by staying calm and being able to make decisions in even the most heated of moments. Having this patience allows the project manager to communicate with others around them even under pressure. Secondly, projects can become very complex and each task needs to be organized along with who will do what and when. Organizational skills help project managers effectively communicate because if organized, they are able to tell the team when and how each project task should be occurring. Lastly, the characteristic of a project manager being creative plays a role in successful communication because it allows them to think on the spot and come up with new and creative solutions to issues within the project.

Having the ability to listen and actually hear what everyone is saying will help to find possible problems before they occur and gain a better understanding of the project and your team members. The final characteristic that makes a project manager an effective leader is being a planner. Having a plan and being able to assign tasks at the right time to the right people will allow the project to thoroughly be communicated to all of those involved.
