Donald Trump Uses a Vast

Last reviewed: January 29, 2008 ~6 min read

¶ … Donald Trump uses a vast number of diverse sources of power, as the article presents them. First of all, even the boasting he constantly uses in his interviews and presentations, including the fact that he always exaggerates his accomplishments and that he is condescending and arrogant, can be considered an important source of power. The reason for this is that this type of attitude intimidates his opponents and enemies and builds around his already existing charisma. Additionally, his self-promotion works, as the article mentions - it is a way of intimidating and of creating extra pressure on all his competitors.

His charisma is obviously another important source of power he uses. As we have seen from the article, ask man.com is just one of the sites that says he is thoroughly loved and admired. If anybody would win the lottery, the article mentions, this is how he would want to be. His whole entourage and lifestyle encourages his own charismatic image as an entrepreneur who really succeeded in life and who was able to make the best out of his businesses. As the article shows, many of the investors are honored to partner with the name and fame of Donald Trump and this would sometimes take precedence over anything else in the negotiation.

On the other hand, his skills are also an important source of power. He has not made his fortune through constant pure luck, but with determination and great investing and entrepreneurial skills. He is a great negotiator and is always familiar with the technical details that help him make the best out of any deal. He is also skilled in ensuring his methods of financing, always relying on partnerships rather than large chunks of his own money. His successes make for excellent relations with the financing partners, because of the increased returns they are thus likely to receive.

2. I think all the sources of power that Donald Trump uses are legitimate, ethical sources of power. First of all, one would need to take into consideration their provenience. The provenience of these sources of power is Donald Trump's business and his image. Both of these have been made almost from scratch by Trump and it is really only his own merit that he has managed to be so successful that many investors and business persons aimed to be associated either with his person or his business in the deals they make.

Second of all, Donald Trump is similar to a product and, in order to be able to sell a product, you need to be able to use all available ethical campaigning means. This certainly includes things like using a promoter figure (in this case, his very own) and the advantages that the market provides (in this case, extreme receptivity to the benefits of the products and for the product itself).

Although his arrogance may turn many people off, it is actually his charisma that attracts the investors, as well as his skills. Most likely, at the final financial evaluation, it will be hard figures that will convince someone to invest or not (despite of what Donald Trump says in the article) and he has managed to always attract investors because he is simply doing a good job and making profitable returns on their investments, this is what it's all about.

So, in my opinion, there is nothing wrong or unethical about the sources of power that Donald Trump uses and I would definitely advocate any of them. They are ways by which the final goals can be reached without producing harm to any third parties.

3. I think the best example in this sense from my own work experience was the promotion of an individual from a simple supervisor position to full manager based not on the credentials or his expertise, but on the personal friendship relationship he had developed with the practice's top manager. In this particular case, any of the usual pre-conditions before promotion to such a top position were not respected, which meant that this was perceived as a politically motivated move. Among these, we can enumerate the individual's skills, experience in the previous position, observed managerial capacities or personal charisma.

Additionally, because it was a power move rather than one motivated by the individual's skills, the respective employee was also not prepared to face the skills that this position actually required. As an operations manager, he would have been in charge with everything from procurement to improving the quality of work in the practice. However, he did not have the experience or theoretical skills to face this.

The first problem that this situation arose, however, was the fact that many of his new employees refused to accept his artificially gained authority, which meant that they were also reticent to accept indications from him. This lowered group morale, as well as the group's capacity to perform at the levels it had formally done. The decrease in efficiency was also matched by a decreased in the quality of services provided. This did not reverberate to critical areas, such as the operations themselves, but there was a noticeable tendency towards quicker and less well prepared consultations, as well as towards a slight tendency to neglect patients' needs.
