Cultural and Personal Safety for Nurses

Issues or Problems within the Leadership & Management

The safety of nurses from essence of workplace-induced risks and injuries as well as illnesses is crucial to the nurses and patients in the process of delivery of quality services to the target audiences. One of the issues in relation to this case study is the lack of culture and personal safety to nurses thus the need for the staff members to focus on the integration of quality measures into addressing these issues and problems. Professional care givers are often poorly cared for themselves thus a representation of one of the ironies in the concept of nursing leadership. It is critical to note that the nurses must enhance their safety with the aim of offering proper care for the patients (Alison Trinkoff et al., 2008).

One of the rationales for the focus on the problem is the need for quality services and products to the consumers or patients. This is because of the close relationship between the quality of service delivery, safety of the patients, and cultural and personal safety of the nurses as they execute their roles and duties within the health centres and hospitals. It is also significant to focus on the achievement of goals and targets of quality health care and service delivery to the patients. This must start with the cultural and personal safety of the nurses as they seek to address the needs and preferences of the patients with enhanced quality and safety. Safety of the nurses or medical staff is critical towards enhancing the safety of the patients as well as improvement of relationship between the service users and providers (Goethals, 2012).

Common Operational and Organizational Issues

There are various common operational and organizational issues in the modern society. Some of these issues include

Conflict among the team members

High turnover of members

Poor performance by the employees

Ineffective meetings

Little or minimal feedback from the patients or customers

Shortage of resources for the products and services

Ineffective advertising and promotions

Ineffectiveness in the description of products and services to patients and other entities

Confusion of the employees in relation to the products and services

Inefficiency of activities

Lack of clear focus for the entity and decision-making processes

Continual shortage of funds across the organization

These operational and organizational issues affect the leadership in limiting its ability and capacity to make adequate decisions for the enhancement of the personal and cultural safety of the nurses or medical staff. One of the real or hypothetical is incapacitation of the nurses thus limiting their ability towards addressing the needs and preferences of the consumers or patients in relation to the services and products for the treatment of their cases (Shekelle, 2013). This indicates that patients will fail to obtain medical assistance while the institution will also fail to achieve their goals and targets.

List and describe one or more specific themes the case highlights

The case highlights the need for personal and cultural safety for the nurses as they focus on the provision of services and products to the patients. This is because of the significant influence of the personal and cultural safety of the nurses to the safety and quality of services and products to the patients. Another theme in the case is the influence of safety of the nurses on the effectiveness and efficiencies of services and products delivery to the patients. The main objective of the case study is to adopt and integrate effective and quality options towards enhancing personal and cultural safety of the nurses.

Possible actions/interventions that could be implemented to solve the identified problem

There are various causes of lack of safety to the nurses as they offer services and products to the patients. Some of these causes include shift work/long work hours, sleepiness, social/familial disruptions, vulnerable groups, long-term effects, and injuries. This is an indication that various institutions should focus on the evaluation of the causes of risks faced by nurses at the workplace in order to adopt and integrate quality interventions towards enhancing the safety of the nurses (Alison Trinkoff et al., 2008). One of the effective and influential approaches towards promotion of safety of the nurses is transformation of the working schedule to offer sufficient opportunity for the practitioners to recapture their energies following stressful interaction with the patients.

This is through minimization of the working hours as well as integration of favourable shifts to operate in the favour of the nurses as they seek to enhance their safety. It will also improve concentration levels of the nurses at the workplace thus quality relationship between the patients and nurses in addition to safety of the target audiences. It would also be effective to organize and implement training programs with the aim of enhancing the awareness of the nurses on the need to enhance their safety. This will be improved through integration of policies, norms, and regulations to ensure that the proposed changes and interventions become part of the organizational culture.

Expected Outcomes

This case study focuses on the achievement of several outcomes or targets in the form of improved caring for the nurses in order facilitate quality relationship with the patients. Some of the expected outcomes include
