Personal Choices It Is Understandable Essay

Certainly, Callie, Emilio, and Raul could all have made different choices in their lives, but that perspective denies the influence of environmental influence and the strength of internalized patterns of behavior and superficial "choices." By the time they were in high school, probably neither Raul nor Emilio could have done much to resist the influence of their environment in terms of how it shaped their ability to make beneficial choices such as not getting sucked into confrontations over perceived slights or insults to learned concepts of masculinity.

The relative ability of the average individual to make choices is substantially a function of many different elements, including intelligence, reasoning skills, natural abilities and tendencies, support network...

Two individuals faced with similar circumstances might make diametrically opposite choices based on the ability of one of them to perceive or analyze situations better than the other. Individuals of similar intelligence and analytical ability but with the benefit of different support networks might make different choices based on the influence of those support networks. Therefore, while the individual is always free to make autonomous choices, by the time the need to make specific choices arises, it may be too late for the individual to make a choice that is completely "free" in the sense that all of us are products of unconscious tendencies of which we may not even be aware, let alone able to overcome.
