¶ … person has to make decisions based upon logic and their individual sense of morality. Sometimes, difficult decisions have to be made either at the home or in the workplace. When such occasions arise, the person must make their choice based on the available options. Ethical theory is comprised of the various hypotheses by which people make so-called ethical decisions. What is right or wrong morally is dependent on the society that constructs those morals. This can make the issue of ethics in a moral quandary even more confusing. It can be difficult trying to make the right choice ethically.
Among the moral dilemmas that can be found in the workplace are issues of separation and segregation based on gender, race, or any other separation factor which would judge anyone based on anything but merit. One of the major debates in the United States is over the concept of Affirmative Action and whether or not a corporation should have quotas; minimum amounts of people that should be hired based on their race and gender. The original purpose of Affirmative Action was to make amends for past discrimination, the process of not allowing people employment or access to education based on the sociological markers described. There has been backlash against the process however because when there is a prescribed number of individuals who have to be accepted because of race or gender, some deserving individuals can become misused. The ethical question that managers have to ask is whether they are hiring an individual based on their abilities or because of a subliminal or subconscious desire to create a diverse work place.
Dealing with gender and racial issues in the workplace can be very difficult in areas other than hiring practices. In a diverse environment, it is also imperative that managers be aware of the people in their employ who are being advanced. Are the person's in positions of power in the organization of a diverse mixture or is there a singularity of genders or ethnicities? If so, then how does a manager address accusations of making unfair decisions based upon these lines? Often something that is unintended as either racist or sexist can be interpreted as such by over-sensitive employees. This can lead to sexual harassment lawsuits or discriminations lawsuits and can end careers.
