Path-Goal Leadership Questionnaire

My experience with the Path-Goal Leadership Questionnaire is that it was quite revealing. The honest responses given for the questionnaire enabled me to understand the kind of leader that I am and the manner in which my followers might perceive me. In addition, the experience with the questionnaire was quite constrictive as it enabled me to understand the different characteristics that can be engaged in with their style of leadership. This is with regards to the different situations, kind of environment and also the personalities of the followers involved. The results indicated that I take up a directive style of leadership. However, the high scores on the other two also show that I am keen on being a supportive leader and at the same time, place high importance on achieving the goals and objectives set (Griffin and Moorhead, 2011)

The characteristics of the Path-Goal Theory will have an impact on my personal style of leadership, which is directive style. This is because these characteristics shed light on situational factors, which are pertinent in having a better style of leadership. For instance, having a directive style of leadership, I am able to learn that it is largely dependent on the personality of followers who have an external locus of control. In addition, these characteristics also help me to understand that there are times that necessitate easing up on such directive leadership (Griffin and Moorhead, 2011). This is largely because the followers also believe that they themselves have a high capability to undertake tasks. More so, the characteristics enable me to understand that if the task at hand is one that has a high structure, a directive style of leadership might be deemed less effective for such an undertaking (Northouse, 2001).

There are results from the questionnaire that have largely surprised me. In particular, I largely expected to have a higher score in the participative section. This is because I consider myself to be a leader that facilitates the participation within groups and also heartens as well as inspires the participation of the followers in attaining goals and objectives. More so, I highly expected to attain greater results in the achievement-oriented style of leadership in comparison to the directive style of leadership. This is largely because I am always keen on ensuring that the goals and objectives that are initially set before the undertaking of a task are fully and effectively realized.
