Background

Obesity is a contributing factor to various chronic diseases in the contemporary society. It is a global problem that affects close to 300 million people all over the world. A third of the population in the United States is obese. Obesity is often associated with an increase in the cost of healthcare; a reduction in quality of life as well as an increase in the risk of premature death. Obesity prevalence is increasing in both developing and developed nations. In the United States obesity prevalence is on a record high. This is a serious problem as it can be a predisposing factor of diseases like diabetes, cancers, and diseases of the heart. The paper will look at obesity among African-Americans in NYC. It will also look at the etiology and epidemiology of obesity (Racette, Deusinger & Deusinger, 2012).I t will further look at whether or not obesity affects specific population depending on their age, race or socioeconomic status. It will finally look at the health interventions which aim to help in the control as well as prevention of the spread of obesity.

There are various reasons why communities increasingly struggle to fight the obesity menace generations after the other. The lifestyles, which is composed of the feeding habit and physical activity in a persons life daily is instrumental in determining a future with obesity or not. It is therefore very significant for the community to be sensitized and educated over what kind of food to eat or to present to their younger children to consume.

Lesson Plan

1. Watch the "Obesity & Fast Food" video with the community members and the introduce the topic of obesity to the class and discuss together with them why many Americans are obese.

2. Allow the community members to watch the video keenly and after that try to counter check if they got a tip on what junk foods are and what healthy foods are from the video. Gauge if the students have picked the bad effects of the junk foods as expressed in the video and their particular danger to the body.

3. Ask the group to brainstorm more of the junk foods that were not mentioned in the brief video watched in class. Now divide the group into two groups and allocate them equal number of the junk foods they mentioned hitherto. Ask the two groups to come up with reasons why the junk foods are so irresistible to them in the daily diet. Note down the reasons which may include the texture, taste, fame, trend coolness, ease of acquisition and more reasons.

4. Ask group at this stage to strive and come up with alternative foods that are healthy foods without health risks yet were not mentioned in the video played in class. Try to have them keep in mind that there are alternative healthy foods that can taste equally nice and crunchy yet not present health risks. Let the group members come up with creative swaps for the unhealthy foods and numerate as many as possible.

5. The two teams in the class will here present their alternative healthy foods to the rest of the groups and will use available ingredients from the community which will make it more local and reachable and practical to many of the community members. For each healthy food alternative, have the entire lot try to equate the junk food that it is replacing and give the reasons why. This is geared towards making the community members that with the elimination of the junk foods that are unhealthy, there can never be shortage or compromise of taste and style.

6. Let the class now analyze the entire exercise and see the extent to which the replacement of the junk foods with healthy foods succeeded. As them to critically see and note which swaps were the best and ideal and if there are alternatives that actually surpassed the original junk foods that they were to replace.
