He a I would begin the plan for completion of the terms of probation for the drug offender in possession of cocaine by delineating the terms of the schedule for paying the court fees and costs. I would give this individual a choice in terms of the payment schedule. Since most people are paid approximately every two weeks, I would allow the probationer to choose from either paying $100 every two weeks or $50 every week. The smaller amount might be beneficial to him or her, whereas the lengthier period of time between payments (two weeks) might also be better. Additionally, I would allow the probationer a five day grace period with which to make payments from the date that they are due to account for any sort of holidays or inconsistencies in payment periods.
The community service organization I would employ is called Bay Area Community Service (BACS). This organization is located within the San Francisco Bay Area, and has a number of different programs in which individuals participating in community service can help people with mental illnesses. I believe it would be most appropriate for the probationer to work in this sort of setting in order to allude to the fact that hard drug usage, such as cocaine, actually can result in psychosis and permanently altered mental states. Thus, I believe that working with these sorts of individuals may assist as a deterrent for the probationer from involving himself or herself with future possession of illegal narcotics.
Specifically, I would assign the probationer to the Atherton House located in Hayward. He or she would be able to complete his or her community service by performing a couple hours of service every weekend, preferably on Saturdays (although Sundays are acceptable as well). The probationer would engage in supervising residents of the house (who are all mentally challenged) during leisure activities, which may require some travel. Additionally, this community service program would put the probationer in a leadership position (although he or she will certainly be assisted with other trained leaders) which will allow the probationer to exercise responsibility and good judgment.
The rehabilitation program that I would select for the probationer is called Drug Rehab Fremont. The city of Fremont is the next over south from Hayward, so the probationer would not have to travel for too far. One of the eminent boons about this particular program is that it combines group work with an individual tailoring of rehabilitation specifically designed for each and every participant. Literature about this particular facility states that,
"Drug Rehab Fremont, California customizes treatment plans to suit the requirements of their clients, creating an ideal environment for their clients to fight drug addiction…Drug Rehab Fremont… provides group and individual counseling, healthy activities, access 12-step classes…and a compassionate aftercare team,…" (No author, no date).
The combination of individualized treatment and the benefit of working with others in group settings will assist the probationer in realizing drug culture for what it is, a disease, and one that he or she is better off having.
