Abstract

Having a philosophy of classroom management is vital for any teacher. This paper revisits the initial essay and expounds on how a classroom can be managed. The course undertaken provided information and guidance that could be used for classroom management. Discussion has been made on improving behavior for the classroom and how important it is to maintain good behavior.

At the start of a new topic or unit, the teacher should provide some background information regarding the topic. The expected outcomes can also be discussed with the students. This allows the students to formulate some ideas regarding the topic or unit, which enables them to understand the unit better as it progresses. Providing some prime background would also enable the teacher to figure out the students who need more attention. Conducting some question and answer sessions before the topic or unit is started will enable the teacher to discover the students understanding of the topic Evertson & Weinstein, 2006.

Having this information will assist the teacher to formulate the course teachings in order to cover all the students' needs. If a majority of students do not have an understanding of the topic, the teacher will have to start with some basic introductions to provide knowledge of the unit.

During this course, it has become clear that students need guidance. Introducing new topics or units should be conducted in a manner that encompasses all the students' abilities and knowledge. Keeping this in mind it is vital for the teacher to have one introductory lesson where they will provide priming materials for the students and also conduct some quizzes, which will enable them to gauge the students' competence on the topic.

Students need to be guided in the course of their studies. It is the teacher's responsibility to ensure that they formulate strategies, which will assist the students to formulate their thoughts and increase their critical thinking skills. The teacher will provide clear and explicit instructions, which the students understand. In case of misunderstanding, the teacher should be prepared to make clarifications. This way all the students will understand the subject matter. Providing clear explanations and teachings also benefit the students as they can manage to organize their thoughts in regards to the topic. Critical thinking can also be developed when the teacher is clear and understood by the students.

Rules and procedures for the classroom

Students need to have respect for each other and for the teacher. The teacher is charged with enforcing rules within the classroom. Some of the rules are basic, while others are dependent on the students' upbringing. During the course, it has become clear that discipline should be enforced equally. The teacher should not favor any student. This will ensure that students have respect for the teacher and the rules. According to Shaw (2008)

students should respect the classroom etiquette like paying attention, following directions, coming to class on time, been prepared for each lesson, and preserving a positive environment for learning.

Students who do not observe class rules should be given a verbal warning first, but if they continue then other disciplinary measure need to be employed. Each school has a formal procedure that stipulates how students should be punished. Punishment should be equal, and no favoritism is employed. Rules enable a teacher to maintain control of the classroom. Maintaining a good classroom behavior is easier than trying to correct inappropriate behavior. Students who have established inappropriate behavior will resist any changes that a teacher attempts in order to correct their behavior. Therefore, it is better for a teacher to maintain order and discipline for the classroom at all times. Establishing clear guidelines and rules, which have consequences if broken will ensure that students maintain good behavior. Parental influence is vital in maintaining discipline of the students. Parents will be kept in the know of their children behavior, and they can also administer disciplinary measures at home.

Students should also be made to understand that disciplinary measures are undertaken to teach them and prepare them for the future. Good student behavior is vital as it protects other students and ensures that all students learn early the need for observing rules. Breaking rules has consequences and disciplinary measures are undertaken to teach students the importance of observing rules. In the real world consequences of breaking rules are more severe, and students need to understand this fact. That is why classroom misbehavior is punished.

Administrative and parental influences

During the course, it has become clear that parental and administrative influence is vital in maintaining the discipline of the students. Involving parents in the guidelines and rules of the classroom will ensure that they communicate this to their children Mehra, 2004.
